Dr. Sandra Harting
Dr. Harting is an Associate Professor in the Sciences Department who teaches courses in Biology and Chemistry and related subjects. Dr. Harting worked for eight years at the Lake Superior Research Institute (UW-Superior) where she ran an instrumentation laboratory that included an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), Flame Ionization Detector (FID), High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), and an Electron Capture Detector (ECD). Dr. Harting also analyzed samples as a part of aquatic toxicology testing and field samples. Dr. Harting then was at Michigan Technological University studying the contributions of native copper mining to mercury contamination of Lake Superior sediments. While at MTU, she performed heavy metal digestions and AA/Cold vapor Hg analyses of Lake Superior sediments, ores, and waters as well as conducting sampling/analysis for a study of blood levels and lead availability in Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga counties in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Toward the end of her tenure at MTU, Dr. Harting was acting operator of a Finnegan-MAT high resolution ICP-MS. Dr. Harting currently incorporates environmental sampling/analysis as a part of her classes. Having access to state of the art analytical equipment would enhance her courses greatly and be a valuable experience for her students.
Kato T. Dee
Mr. Dee is the NRM Faculty and is also responsible for coordinating the program. He has five and one-half years of environmental consulting experience with project experience in hydrogeology, geochemistry, geotechnical engineering, remedial construction, GIS, and radiation health. Prior to working in the consulting industry, he spent approximately five years at the University of Kansas Plasma Analytical Laboratory as a Research Assistant (RA). While an RA at KU-PAL, he was responsible for the operation and maintenance of an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), Laser Ablation Mass Spectrometer (LA-MS), and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) instruments. KU-PAL received and analyzed water, soil, sludge, and rock samples for academic institutions and industry. Mr. Dee participated in all aspects of analytical laboratory analysis from sample preparation to final reporting of analytical data. Currently, Mr. Dee is enrolled as a student at the Colorado School of Mines pursuing a PhD in Geochemistry. In addition, Mr. Dee's industry and academic experiences will provide further educational opportunities for students in the NRM program.
Dr. Mark R. Cole
Dr. Cole earned his BS and MS degrees in Geology from Ohio University. In 1973, he graduated with a PhD in Geology from University of Washington and was employed by Texaco that same year. During his career with Texaco he worked as an exploration geologist and manager on the west coast of the U.S., in Alaska, and the mid-continent. Later during his career Mark worked with the Japanese on projects in the U.S. He conducted exploration efforts in Southeast Asia and China. In late 2001, after 28 years of working for Texaco as an exploration geologist, project manager, regional manager and commercial development geosciences advisor, retirement came at the time of the Texaco Chevron merger.
Dr. Cole has an extensive laboratory and equipment experience through out his career, beginning in the chemistry stockroom at the Portsmouth branch of Ohio University when a high school student and as an undergraduate. While working on his graduate degrees he had extensive experience with x-ray diffraction equipment (XRD) at both OU and at the University of Washington as a research assistant. Mark was involved in a project on the North Slope of Alaska involving the hands-on use of several SEMs (Scanning Electron Microscopes) while working at Texaco. He also has worked with petrographic microscopes and associated thin sectioning equipment as part of his PhD studies.
Dr. Cole is president of the Collegiate Peaks Chapter, Trout Unlimited. He also serves as Vice-Chair on the Lake County Watershed Advisory Council. He is on the board of directors for Partnership for Lake County Recreation a 501(c)3 organization and a member of the Community Park Committee. He teaches geology, fly fishing and fly tying at the Timberline and Chaffee County Colorado Mountain College campuses.
Melissa R. Wolfe
Ms. Wolfe is a new member of the Natural Resource Management program joining in May 2009 as an Assistant Program Manager, where she assists in field work and research of NRM projects and will also teach Soil and Water Chemistry (CHE215) course in the fall semester. This course will utilize TAL with soil and water analysis from the Lake County region. Ms. Wolfe graduated with her M.S. at the University of Kansas studying in the Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory (IGL). While working at IGL as a Research Assistant she utilized a noble-gas mass spectrometer, ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS, thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). She is also experienced running and maintaining a clean geochemistry lab utilized for high precision analytical work. She looks forward to working in TAL with NRM student interns and students, which will provide students with a complete progression of the scientific method from formulating a hypothesis to interpreting data analyzed in TAL.
