Intro to Massage Therapy (1 credit)
Thursdays, 6-7:30pm, Jan. 17-May 2
Teaches hands-on techniques to complete a full-body massage, along with integration of healing touch (Swedish massage, foot reflexology and energy balance). Cost: one credit of tuition.
Personal Care Attendant Certification
Tuesdays, 6-9pm, Jan. 22-April 30
This hands-on training gives you skills to become a home care worker, paid care provider, family caregiver and/or volunteer by preparing you to assist the chronically ill, disabled, or frail older adult. GED or high school diploma is not required. Minimum age for enrollment is 16. Required texts (must have before first class) are "Quick Tips for Caregivers" (ISBN#09653873-9-9) and its workbook (ISBN#0-9726833-3x). Texts can be ordered at 888-846-7008 or www.medifecta.com. Cost: $235.
Change Your Diet, Change Your Life
Mondays, 5:30-6:30pm, Jan. 21-Feb. 4
Good nutrition can be easy and huge health benefits can be gained from small changes. In this class you learn the three most common roadblocks to eating well. You learn the how and why--the science behind each change--which empowers you to carry through with changes more easily. You learn practical tips that you can incorporate into your diet immediately. Cost: $26.
Kitchen Cupboard Medicine
Saturday, 9am-Noon, Feb. 9
Hippocrates said "Let food be thy medicine" and in this class, you learn how. Using everyday food and spices you probably already have in your kitchen, this class shows you how to use these foods for common minor health problems including immune support, skin irritations, digestive upset and more. Please bring two small glass jars with secure lids in order to take home your own home remedies. Cost: $36.
10 Foods for Optimal Health
Thursday, 6-8pm, Apr. 11
Science has validated long-held beliefs about the health benefits of certain foods, and these foods can be eaten regularly to your advantage. Introduces you to the most important "super foods" and the science behind each. You might be surprised that chocolate makes this list! You have a chance to prepare and sample some of these foods and will leave class with simple recipes for incorporating each food into your diets. Cost: $25.
The "Ins & Outs" of Digestion
Saturday, 9-11am, Apr. 13
The digestive process is such an integral part of health, but is rarely discussed. Discuss the "ins and outs" of healthy digestion and how to improve it through diet, supplements and lifestyle. Cost: $18.
Community First Aid & CPR (.5 credit)
Classes are offered Saturdays, 8am-5:30pm:
In Carbondale: 1/26, 2/23, 3/23 or 4/20.
In Glenwood Springs: 1/19, 2/9, 3/9 and 4/13.
Prepares the student for certification in CPR and basic first aid. Skills will include basic life support, airway obstruction, control of bleeding, shock, and patient care for the unconscious. Text required and must be purchased. Certification is through the American Heart Association. Cost: one half credit of tuition.
CPR for Professionals (.5 credit)
Classes are offered Saturdays, 8am-5:30pm:
In Carbondale: 2/16 or 4/6.
In Glenwood Springs: 2/2 or 3/30.
Meets the requirements for American Heart Association Basic Life Support for those who work in emergency services, health care, and other professional areas. Material presented in the course is basic patient assessment, basic airway management, rescue breathing, and CPR for infant, child, and adult patients. Text required and must be purchased. Cost: one half credit of tuition.
Wilderness First Aid (1 credit)
Wednesdays, 5:30-9:05pm, Feb. 6-Mar. 6
Wilderness and Remote First Aid requires current adult CPR/AED certification before course begins. Students must be at least 14 years of age on or before the last scheduled session and, if less than 16, must request permission at the Lappala Center in Carbondale to register. Students must attend the first class. American Red Cross materials are used. Cost: one credit of tuition.
Wilderness First Responder (4 credits)
Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 6-8:50pm, Jan. 15-Feb. 27
Field days: 2/9, 2/10, 2/23 & 2/24
This course provides the student with those skills and emergency medical care techniques used by guides, trip leaders and others providing primary care in backcountry setting. The student will be able to respond correctly to those medical and trauma situations commonly encountered when entry into the EMS system is delayed or unlikely. Cost: 4 credits of tuition plus $330 supplemental course charge.
