JAKE ALLEE holds a BFA from The University of Iowa, and an MFA from the University of North Texas. During his academic career he has participated in study abroad programs in Italy at the International School of Graphic Arts in Venice Italy, and The University of the Andes in Venzuela. Other highlights include attending Utah State University as a special student in the ceramics program in 1999, travel abroad to Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, The Czech Republic, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Holland, Jamaica, Korea, Mexico, Panama, and Puerto Rico. During graduate school Jake worked as an art handler serving all the Major art galleries and Museums in the Dallas Fort Worth area and participated in the construction of the firing facilities at the St Petersburg Clay Company in Florida. Upon completion of his formal education, Jake served 9 months as a studio assistant to Don Reitz and was a summer assistant in the Ceramics program at Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Jake has taught at Yavapai Community College in Clarkdale Arizona, McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, and currently teaches full time at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado. His work, photographs, and writings have been published in Clay Times magazine, Ceramics Monthly magazine, Pottery Making Illustrated, Massa Ceramics Magazine of Brazil, California Homes, Creative Quarterly Design Magazine, The Best of Artists book series by Kennedy Publishing, The Ceramic Arts daily book series, and Surface Design for Ceramics by Lark Books. Jake's work has been exhibited in 37 of the 50 United States, including Cambodia, China, England, Japan, Spain, and The United Arab Emirates. The Northern Arizona Tozan Ceramics Collection, The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, The Las Cruses Museum of Art, The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, The Harlow Collection at Bemidji State University, the private collection of Robert and Louise Arnold, and the FLICAM Ceramic Museum in Fuping China are just some of the permanent collections holding his work. She has spent the last twelve years working in watercolor and mixed media, as well as teaching workshops at arts centers worldwide. She lives in Woody Creek, CO, with her husband and two children. She has taught at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado, the Michael Kohler Arts Center, San Antonio Center for Arts and Crafts, and the Austin Museum of Art. KAY CESARK, MFA, has exhibited at Navy Pier, Chicago, and Currents '95 at Lill Street Gallery, Chicago, and among her awards are a 1995 S.D.F.A. Award. Her poetry unites both loves, and has earned several national awards. For six years she worked as senior writer/associate producer for the PBS nature series, Wild America. Her recent memoir, Desert of the Heart, continues to receive raves from readers and the media, and her writing workshops have been praised as "enlightening" and "compelling." MICHAEL CONNIFF, a graduate of Harvard University, is the founder and CEO of the leading community blogging company Post Time Media Inc.; editor-in-chief of Aspen Post, a featured blogger on Huffington Post, and the host of "ConGames" in Aspen, the #1-rated talk show on the Western Slope of Colorado. His distinguished career in journalism and media has included news reporting and editing for a variety of national, regional, and local newspapers, magazines, media services, and starting up a number of new media companies. BOB COOK is a certified acupressure therapist, and International Martial Arts competition champion. He has practiced martial arts and oriental and natural health throughout the valley for 40 years. She received her BA in Modern Languages (French and Italian) in 1998. In 2008 she went to Stony Brook University (SUNY System), to work on an MA in Romance Languages in Italian, at which time she has the possibility to live and work in Rome and Sicily (Italy), and eventually returned to PR. After two years there, she decided to go back to work on a PhD, which she currently is finishing at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, through the Institute of Communications Research. HOLLY CURCIO received a BFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and an MFA from Arizona State University. Holly has been an artist-in-residence at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Mendocino Art Center, Anderson Ranch Arts Center and is currently a resident at the Carbondale Clay Center. JANIS DYBDAHL has a PhD from Colorado State University, her MBA from the University of Eastern New Mexico, and received her BFA from the University of Kansas. Janis is passionate about teaching Spanish and French. Her teaching career began in 1973. She has studied in Canada, France, Switzerland, Mexico and Spain, with adventures to various Latin American countries. Her high school teachinig career spans 30+ years and she has recently retired from Aspen High School. Her latest CMC French class "traveled" (via PowerPoint) to various Francophone destinations: Bora Bora, Montreal, France, Guadeloupe, and other intriguing places. Shelly owned Bermuda Weddings and Specials Events for over 15 years and also founded the Bermuda Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C. "I love to see beautiful fragments from different places come together to create something whole, new and amzing that will last for centuries. Love joy, pain, tenderness and devotion look different on every person. Every landscape vista is unique. Yet all things have beauty. RETT HARPER holds an MA from George Washington University. She has taught English and Theater at the high school and junior high levels and has written and directed 22 of the Aspen Community School's Annual Musicals. He is well known for his large format landscape photographs and his technical expertise. Most recently, he has been working with Norman Gershman photographing Muslims who saved Jews during World War II. shuck@coloradomtn.edu JANIS HUGGINS is a botanist, author and photographer who's recent book Snowmass Village-Wild at Heart won the Colorado Non-Fiction Book of the year Award in October 2006. After 40 years in Aspen, she's still out exploring the area when not involved in rare plant research and monitoring for the Colorado Natural Heritage Program at Colorado State University. EVA JANKOVSKY holds an MA in Education Administration with an emphasis in Early Childhood Leadership from the University of Denver. She began a non-profit in Cambodia to help under-privileged children attend school. Eva currently works for Kids First in Aspen as a coach to the early childhood teachers in Pitkin County. ejankovsky@coloradomtn.edu ANTHONY JERKUNICA is a professional ballet dancer, builder, yoga studio owner, world traveler, surfer, and husband. CJ JILEK grew up outside of the Chicago area and found she had a few great loves: ceramics, travel and the natural world. Cj received her undergraduate degree in ceramics from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1995. Afterwards she started traveling and exploring her ceramics. Cj moved to Northern California to wood fire where she created vessel forms, exploring the wood fire surface in conjuction with textures representative of the natural world. Cj continued her travels through California and relocated to Santa Barbara where she taught ceramics for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the public school system, and private schools. Cj hs always been involoved in her community volunteering for organizations such as Empty Bowls, Ventura County Potters Guild, and Santa Barbara City College. While living in Southern Californi she traveled the western United States. in 2006 Cj took a short-term residency at the Mendocino Arts Center, leading to her renewed interest in graduate studies. Utah State University provided her with the opportunity to study and travel; she studied in Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and China. She recently completed her MFA degree in 2010. Being inspired by her travels, Cj is now creating porcelain biomorphic forms fired in oxidation with mixed media elements. Through her work she questions ideas of beauty, attraction, eroticism, adaptation and desire. She continues to travel giving lectures and workshops. CHUCK JOHNSON is a licensed equine veterinarian, as well as a certified OCE, EMT-P, PALS and PHTLS provider. He is also a CPR and ACLS instructor, as well as a primary EMS instructor for the State of Colorado. In addition, Chuck serves as the medical coordinator for Mountain Rescue Aspen and Buttermilk Ski Patrol. chjohnson@coloradomtn.edu WILLIAM (RICK) JOHNSON is Instructional Chair working with CMC-Aspen's Economic and Community Development programs-including Sustainability Programs, Career and Workforce Development, Computers, Business and EMS. STEPHEN KANIPE is the Chief Building Official with the Aspen/Pitkin County Community Development Department. She specializes in Ski Conditioning, Bootcamp, Indoor Cycling, and Strength/Body Pump class. Her motto: "If you want to see change, you must feel the challenge." SUSAN KOSCH trained and competed for over 13 years in ballroom dancing in Indianapolis, Washington, DC, and New York. She won the nationals as an amateur in her age division in 1985. SONIA KUNGLI has her MA in Spanish Literature and Culture from the University of Akron, Ohio. She has been tutoring in the Roaring Fork valley and has taught many languages for Colorado Mountain College. HENRY KUNTER graduated from Colorado State University in May 1998 with a BS in Business Administration and The University of Phoenix in February 2005 with a MBA in Accounting. Krystal has taught various fitness classes since 2009. CATHERINE LUTZ is a freelance writer, editor, and photographer who lives in Aspen. A former reporter and editor at local newspapers, she currently is a regular contributor to Aspen Business Journal, and Aspen Sojourner magazine, among other publications. KAREN LUTZ holds a Bachelors degree in Physical Education. She competed in the Junior Wimbledon and on the fledgling European circuit while in college. Karen has taught tennis since 1977. PAUL MACFARLANE has practiced T'ai Chi Ch'uan since 1998. Her research interests include the Prehistory of the Great Basin and Northern Southwest, Risk Theory, Prehistoric Ceramics, and selected topics in Historic Archaeology. Since 1983, her professional experience includes the management of large and small cultural resource management projects for private firms and government entities throughout Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and parts of Montana. Richard attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice and New York Law School in New York City. Currently he is employed as Deputy District Attorney in Aspen for the Ninth Judicial District. Richard moved full time to Aspen six years ago and enjoys the outdoor life with his wife and two daughters. JULIE NEMIROFF has practiced Hatha Yoga for 16 years. She completed a Holistic Health Practitioner license and received her International Teacher training and certification as a Kundalini Yoga Instructor. Past editorial jobs were at the onetime publications Canyon Times newspaper in Salt Lake City and UltraSport magazine in Boston, and at the once locally published Climbing magazine. A longtime active freelancer, she writes a humor column for the Glenwood Springs Post-Independent; elsewhere locally has written for the Valley Journal, Aspen Daily News and Aspen Sojourner; and has published in many newspapers and magazines including The Washington Post Sunday magazine, The Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe and The Denver Post, with chapters or essays in half a dozen book anthologies. She authored a biography, Second Ascent: The Story of Hugh Herr, published in hardback by Stackpole Books and paperback by Dell Publishing. She graduated with high honors in English from Middlebury College in Vermont, and received a Masters Degree form the Columbia Journalism School, New York. She is winner of the American Alpine Club Literary Award. She has been a freelance photographer and columnist, a private chef and caterer and a French teacher and tutor in the Aspen area. aroland@coloradomtn.edu DAVE RUFFLEY was born in a railroad/coal mining town in western Pennsylvania. His family history is interwoven with the working class of the mining/railroad/steelmaking industries of the Pittsburgh region, and those roots have strongly shaped his outlook on life and education. Dave is a 1983 graduate of the Air Force Academy, where he majored in Russian Area History. A career Air Force Security Forces officer, he commanded security and law enforcement units in Alaska, Germany and Wyoming. He also served as an Air Force Russian Foreign Area Officer. In that capacity he taught Russian and World History at the USAF Academy from 1990-1992 and from 1998 to 2003. He completed a tour of duty as an United Nations Military Observer in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Following his retirement from the US Air Force, Dr. Ruffley taught Russian, World and Environmental History at Colorado College in Colorado Springs from 2003-2007. He has also been an adjunct instructor for Pikes Peak Community College, Regis University and Colorado Mountain College, teaching multiple areas of History and Political Science, Dr. Ruffley holds Masters Degrees in International Relations from Troy State University, in Russian/Soviet Studies from the University of Washington, and a PhD in Russian History from Ohio State University. druffley@coloradomtn.edu LUKE RUNYON is a reporter with Aspen Public Radio in Aspen, Colorado. Luke has received a Masters of Arts in Public Affairs Reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the University of Illinois at Springfiled. Previously, Luke worked as a statehouse reporter for Illinois Public Radion in Springfield, Illinois, where he covered the governor's office, state legislture and the Illinois supreme court. In Aspen, Luke covers local government, the environment, and energy issues. SUSAN SANCHEZ has a BS in mathematics from Colorado State University and a MS from the University of Colorado. Subsequently he received his BFA in Ceramics from the University of Colorado Boulder, and his MFA in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design. Steve has shown his work internationally and throughout Colorado, including Denver Art Museum and Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. Recently he opened Aspen Alternative Artspaces, with his partner Erin Perry, and teaches skiing and snowboarding on Snowmass Mountain. SHAYNE MORGAN SLEDGE received a BA from University of California at San Diego and has studied yoga and meditation for over 20 years. Since moving to the Roaring Fork Valley in 2005, Marti has worked with Pathfinders for Cancer, Valley View Hospital, and Hospice of the Valley. She is married to Ted Stude and they enjoy hiking, biking, golf, and all the wonderful cultural activities in the surrounding area. They have one daughter, Laura who lives in St. Louis, and a frisky 12 year old Airedale terrier, Molly. CHRISTINA TINKER After teaching adults in the business world as a Corporate Trainer for many years, she began teaching Psychology about 3 years ago, for University of Phoenix, Kaplan Unversity, and CMC, in both in-person and online formats. CHRISTINE TINNER graduated from Michigan State University (James Madison College), with a bachelor's degree in Urban Policy and Psychology. After many years as a massage therapist and vocational instructor, Christine obtained a TEFL, taught English in Switzerland, and obtained a Master's in Education specializing in Literacy from Walden University. She is currently working on her Ph.D. in Education: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment also from Walden University. She is also a communications consultant at the World Bank and Photography Fellow at Georgetown University's Center for Social Impact Communication. As a consultant she helps organizations communicate strategically via imagery. Leigh was previously Editor-in-Chief at Aspen Peak magazine and Media Relations Director for Aspen Film. SARA VOORHEES BERRY graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English from Lake Forest College and completed an MA at CSU, where she taught English composition. Prior to joining the Crystal Springs Builders, Brian held a project management position with a large heavy civil construction firm based in Anchorage, Alaska.
