Canyon Orientation Backpacking Class in Utah, May 6-11

Photo of native American ruins in the backcounty or Utah.Explore remote canyons & ancient artifacts where the Anasazi dwelled from 700-2000 years ago. This backpacking course introduces students to canyon travel & camping techniques in Grand Gulch Primitive Area.  Students develop proficiency in Leave No Trace Travel Techniques, canyon travel & group camping skills while exploring the geology, geography and ecology of canyon country.

This is an eco-focused course with classroom sessions on & 5/2 (menu planning) and includes a 5-day, 4-night overnight camping trip from 5/6-5/11.

Dates & Times:  Monday & Wednesday night 4/30 & 5/2  for a course orientation & menu planning from 6-10pm.  Expedition is  May 6-11 (Monday to Friday).  Course leaves for Utah on Sunday May 5 & ends on May 11 at 1pm. 

Location: Grand Gulch Primitive Area in Cedar Mesa.  This is near Monticello, Utah, about 1 hour south of Moab.

Travel: Carpool with CMC (van leaves Sunday, May 6 at 1pm) and returns to Breckenridge on Friday, May 11 at 1 pm. Alternatively, you can provide your own transportation and meet the class Sunday night at the group campsite just north of the Kane Gulch Ranger Station.

How to Get There:  Kane Ranger Station-4 miles south of U-95 on U-261.

Equipment:  Refer to the supply list for all details on equipment or pick up a supply list at the front office when registering.

Cost: 2 credit course fee plus

  • $95 course fee for permits & supplies
  • $30 optional transportation fee if carpooling with CMC

Technical Canyoneering, May 13-17

Introduction to technical canyoneering in Moab and Arches National Park, Utah. Course meets for an organizational meeting on Tuesday 5/1 from 6-10 pm. Course travel day to field site in Moab is Sunday 5/13, leaving CMC in Breckenridge at 1 pm.

Students can drive themselves to Moab and meet at campsite on Sunday night, if students want to drive themselves.

Overnight camping provided 5/13- 5/17. Course leaves Moab and travels back to CMC on Friday 5/18 at 1 pm. There is an additional $125 travel charge payable at time of registration. Dates: May 14-18 (Monday to Friday).

Location: Group Campsites reserved for course in Arches National Park and Big Bend Group Campground.

Travel: Carpool with CMC (van leaves Sunday, May 13 at 1pm) and returns to Breckenridge on Friday, May 18 at 1 pm. Alternatively, you can provide your own transportation and meet the class Sunday night, May 13 at the group campsite.

Equipment Camping: CMC provides tents, group cooking equipment and campsites. Canyoneering: CMC provides ropes, carabiners and other specialty equipment. Contact Brian if you need helmet, harness and/or daypack.

Cost: 2 credit fee + course fee of $125 for permits/camping fees/supplies.

Wilderness EMT Upgrade in Moab, May 21-25

Photo of Wilderness Emergency Medical Training drill in the field.Join the WEMS staff for a WEMT Upgrade in Moab, Utah this May. This course will be held over 5 days just outside Moab near the Colorado River at our private group campsite (Big Bend). 

This course is a 45 hour wilderness medicine upgrade certification for EMT's, nurses and physicians. Course meets the Wilderness Medical Society Guidelines. An American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) WEMT certification card valid for 3 years will be awarded upon successful completion.

The course is taught by CMC's Wilderness EMS director, Brian Taylor (CCEMT-P, WEMT, SAR medic).

Group campsite at Big Bend Campground available for camping. Go biking, hiking or climbing after class in the evening. CPR is not included in course. TEXT REQUIRED. Proof of current license or certification as an EMT-B, EMT-P, physician, or RN is required.

Dates & Times: May 21-25 (Monday to Friday) from 8 am-6 pm.  Course ends on May 25 at 1pm.  Students have nights free to explore Moab area.

Location: Group Campsite C reserved for course at Big Bend Group Campground. Group site is about 4 1/2 hours from Breckenridge.

Camping:  Students can camp at our reserved site for the entire course or students are welcome to find their own campsite.

Travel: Carpool with CMC (van leaves Sunday, May 20 at 1pm) and returns to Breckenridge on Friday, May 25 at 1 pm. Alternatively, you can provide your own transportation and meet the class Sunday night or Monday morning at the group campsite.

How to Get There: The Big Bend Recreation Site is located on Utah Highway 128, 8 miles east of the junction of Utah Highway 128 and U.S. Highway 191. When you reach the Big Bend Recreation Site, Group Site C is across this highway.

Equipment:  CMC supplies all medical & rescue supplies.  CMC has camping equipment available for rent.

Cost: 2 credit course fee plus

  • $22 Wilderness Emergency Care Textbook
  • $40 camping/permit/supply fee
  • $30 optional transportation fee if traveling with CMC vehicle
  • Camping at Big Bend Group site included in course fee.

Wilderness First Responder in Moab, May 21-28

Outdoor Enthusiasts, Guides, Educators, and Search and Rescue Team Members – Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification remains the most comprehensive baseline wilderness-protocol medical education. Learn to assess, to treat and to appropriately evacuate patients with emergent backcountry medical issues during CMC's upcoming WFR practicum near Moab, Utah!

Earn 4 college credit hours and an array of medical knowledge in CMC's intensive 8-day, 72-hour WFR course. Our instructors all have more than a decade of Outdoor Education, SAR and/or Guide experience, and also currently hold positions at medical facilities or ambulance service.

River Orientation, June 3-8

Photo of a raft at rivers edge with a thunderstorm in the distance.Colorado's mountains host some of the most pristine, the most diverse and the most scenic rivers on the planet! Learn to navigate backcountry river wilderness corridors during CMC's upcoming River Orientation seminar.

Students embark on a 60-hour intensive wilderness river course on three stunning river sections. Seasoned river educators share their knowledge of whitewater navigation, safety, strategy and emergency protocols on experiential floats down the Upper Colorado and the Blue River.

Students put their new knowledge into practice preparing for and executing a three-day, two-night float through magnificent Ruby-Horsethief Canyon on the Colorado/Utah border.

Students gain a comprehensive practical knowledge of:

Class meets in Breckenridge for organizational session on Friday, June 1, from 6-9:50 p.m. Three field trips held: June 3, 4, and 5.

Ruby-Horsethief multi-day overnight trip held Wednesday through Thursday, June 6-8.
