Glenwood Springs – Spring Valley Campus Outdoor Education Spring 2013 Classes
OUT-112 (Desert Orientation)
This backpacking-based course takes place in the North Maricopa Wilderness Area, Arizona, February 28 - March 5, 2013. Text required. Supplemental charge includes most meals (17), transportation, and campground fees. Tent, sleeping bag, and backpack rentals are available. The supplemental charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
BIO-144 (Natural History of the Desert)
This class will take place in the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area and Black Ridge Wilderness Area near Grand Junction, with access gained from the Colorado River using rafts. Our class will focus on desert riparian and terrestrial ecosystems of Rattlesnake, Mee, and Knowles Canyons. Instruction will be provided on basic river rafting skills and safety; however, each day will consist of long day hikes exploring desert natural history topics. Hikes will occur on sometimes rugged terrain and cover up to 10 miles. The non-refundable course charge includes seven meals, transportation, rafting and group equipment. Students are responsible for their own lunches. An equipment list for the class will be posted on Canvas. Two mandatory classroom meetings will be on 3/15 and 3/22. Minimum age is 17.
OUT-114 (Snow Orientation)
Avalanche transceivers and shovels are provided. Students are responsible for their own food and personal gear. This trip includes two backpacking experience overnights in the snow (1/26 - 1/27 and; 2/1-2/3). Backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags available to rent. The supplemental charge includes field transportation, US Forest Service access, parking fees, and group equipment. The supplemental charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
PER-152 (Avalanche Safety I, SV01 & SV02)
Students receive a certificate of completion stating that the course was taught following the guidelines of AIARE. The class includes two backcountry outings, which will cover up to five miles. Students must ski, snowboard, or snowshoe at an intermediate level or receive instructor consent. Avalanche beacons, shovels, and probe poles are provided; however, students may bring their own for the instructor to evaluate for appropriateness. The supplemental charge includes access fee, textbook, field transportation, and AIARE Level I Certificate. The supplemental charge for the class is non-refundable. Minimum Age 17.
PED-150 (Rock Climbing I, SV01)
There is a mandatory pre-field trip meeting at the Spring Valley climbing wall on Wednesday 3/27, from 5-5:50 pm. This course includes a three day overnight field trip to Unaweep Canyon or an alternative location (3/29 - 3/31). Climbing harnesses, helmets, ropes, climbing shoes, and other group gear are provided. Tents and sleeping bags are available to rent. The supplemental charge includes transportation, access and camping fees, two breakfasts, and two dinners and is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
PED-150 (Rock Climbing I, SV02)
There is a mandatory pre-field trip meeting at the Spring Valley climbing wall on Wednesday 4/10, from 5-5:50 pm. This course includes a three day overnight field trip to Unaweep Canyon or an alternative location (4/12 - 4/14). Climbing harnesses, helmets, ropes, climbing shoes, and other group gear are provided. Tents and sleeping bags are available to rent. The supplemental charge includes transportation, access and camping fees, two breakfasts, and two dinners and is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
PED-151 (Rock Climbing II)
There is a mandatory pre-field trip meeting at the Spring Valley climbing wall on Wednesday 4/17, 5-5:50pm. This class builds upon the skills of Rock Climbing I and/or sport climbing. Helmets, harnesses, ropes, climbing shoes, and group equipment are provided. This class includes an overnight field outing to Unaweep Canyon area from 4/19-21. Text provided. Tents and sleeping bags are available to rent. The supplemental charge includes transportation, access and camping fees, two breakfasts and two dinners. The supplemental charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
OUT-218 (River Orientation II)
This class provides advanced-level training and knowledge in whitewater raft handling and water reading skills through direct experiences on selected rivers. There will be three day outings (4/12, 4/13 & 4/14), and a field overnight trip (4/19 - 4/21). Students will learn advanced rafting techniques, river trip planning, advanced river safety procedures, equipment, logistics, camp management, hazard evaluation, minimum impact techniques, and the natural history of river environments. Added emphasis will be placed on approaching material from a leadership perspective. (Pre-requisites: OUT-118, OUT-121, OUT-122, OUT-204, or instructor permission). The supplemental charge is non-refundable. Minimum age: 17.
HWE-129 (Wilderness First Responder)
This course will be taught to the guidelines of the Wilderness Medicine Society. Field meeting dates will emphasize practical skills in backcountry settings. Field Days are mandatory on Saturday and Sunday, 2/9 & 2/10 and 2/23 & 2/24. Upon successful completion of this course students will be awarded certifications from the American Heart Association (CPR) and Desert Mountain Medicine (WFR). Text and expendable supplies provided. The Supplemental Charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
ANT-280 (Southwest Field Exploration)
This backpacking-based class will concentrate on the Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) culture through five days in southeastern Utah, location TBA. Course has two pre-meeting dates and one post-trip date. Class will not meet on 3/29, 4/12, or 4/19. Students should be prepared to walk at least 5-9 miles per day in rough and uneven backcountry terrain. Vaughn Hadenfeldt, of Far Out Expeditions, will accompany the field course. Students are responsible for their own food. Group cooking equipment is provided. Backpack, tent, and sleeping bag rentals are available. The supplemental charge includes transportation, trailer rental, and permit access charge. The supplemental charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
OUT-287 (Internship: Outdoor Leadership)
Class includes classroom sessions and field leadership/internship experiences. Two texts are required.
PER-161 (Backcountry Cooking)
This class consists of practical cooking sessions at each meeting. Learn to make gourmet backcountry meals from scratch such as quiche, pizza, cakes, and cinnamon rolls. This class will cover cookware, nutrition, planning, preparing and packing for tasty expedition-type foods. Course fee covers all food. Group cookware is provided. The supplemental charge is non-refundable.
OUT-120 (Orienteering)
This class focuses on map reading and compass skills in mountainous terrain. Students need a compass, which will be discussed at the first class meeting. The class will not meet on 3/28. The course fee covers cost for a map. This trip includes two weekend field day outings 4/27 & 4/28. The supplemental charge is non-refundable. Minimum age 17.
OUT-166 (High Angle Rescue)
This is an intensive rigging class that addresses rescue in vertical terrain. The class will review safety systems, anchor systems, and lowering/uphaul systems. Scenario-based instruction will cover technical lowers and uphauls of the injured climber, guidelines, pickoff, third man medical, and other practical high-angle rescue techniques. This course includes two day outings (3/23, 3/24) and one field overnight (4/6 - 4/7). Helmets, harnesses, ropes, climbing shoes, and group equipment are provided. Tents and sleeping bags are available to rent. The supplemental course charge includes transportation, access and camping fees, and two meals. The supplemental charge is non-refundable.
