JOU-102             Intro to Editing for Media (3 CR)

Focuses on the process of editing articles for publication in newspapers, newsletters, magazines, and the Internet. The Associated Press style is emphasized.

Prerequisites: Requires college-level reading.

 

JOU-105            Introduction to Mass Media (3 CR)

Places the mass media in an historical and cultural perspective, considering the validity, integrity, and influence of the media in a democracy.

Prerequisite: College-level reading.

 

JOU-106            Fundamentals of Reporting (3 CR)

Introduces news writing, reporting, and interviewing with an emphasis on clarity, accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and fairness.

Prerequisite: College-level reading.

 

JOU-206             Intermediate Newswriting & Editing (3 CR)

Presents how to gather informtion as an investigative reporter through research of local, state, and federal government publications; how to cover police beat and city hall; how our courts and regulatory agencies function; and how to cover other challenges such as the environment, religion, science, medical, public safety, and business.

Prerequisites: Requires college-level reading.

 

JOU-225             Internet Media (3 CR)

Explores techniques and approaches in the latest delivery methods for internet-based journalism. Students explore digital media outlets such as blogs, microblogs, audio and video podcasts, e-zines, and social networks. Students create journalistic pieces for internet-based media, focusing on best journalistic practices, ethics of internet media, and technology emergence affecting digital journalism. Concepts in video production, photography, writing, sourcing, editing, and additional relevant skills necessary for the citizen journalist are introduced. Students create all components for the online dissemination of news, documentary, and infotainment.

Prerequisite: College-level reading.

 

MAR-216               Principles of Marketing (3 CR)

Presents the analysis of theoretical marketing processes and the strategies of product development, pricing, promotion and distribution, and their applications to business and the individual consumer.

Prerequisites: BUS 115 or BUS 102.

 

BUS-120             Intro to E-Commerce (3 CR)

Provides an introduction to electronic commerce - the business trend of the future. Covers definitions of e-commerce, technology and software requirements, security issues, electronic payment, and marketing strategies. Focuses on what to expect when creating a dot com as well as the business-to-business use of e-commerce.

Prerequisite: College-level reading.

 

RTV-210               Audio Mixing (3 CR)

Includes the fundamentals of audio mixing from the audio source to final master. Explains the principles of mixing and the technical foundations of audio recording. Analyzes the principles of acquiring, manipulating, recording, and final mixing of audio and discusses the differences between digital and analog recording. Each student will summarize the function of microphones, audio sources, recording devices, and speakers and complete recording exercises and projects according to provided guidelines. Demonstration of linear and non-linear master mixing will also be required.

MGD-101             Intro to Computer Graphics (3 CR)

Introduces the students to the computer systems developed for graphics. The students will learn the hardware and software components for multimedia production. Each student will explore basic computer operations, ergonomics, file management, scanning techniques, archiving capabilities, and utilization of the multimedia department server and internet connection.

Prerequisite: College-level reading.

 

MGD-102             Intro to Multimedia (3 CR)
Introduces the types of equipment and technical considerations used in multimedia productions and the multimedia professions. It focuses on current types of equipment such as scanners, printers, digital cameras, and computers. Students gain hands-on experience in how the technology is utilized for input and output in production and design projects. Overview of software and basic design principles will be explored.

Prerequisites: Take MGD 101.  

MGD-141            Web Design I (3 CR)


Introduces the fundamentals of HTML syntax using a simple text editor to create a web page. Web-safe colors and the use of graphic editors will be explored. Students study Web aesthetics and intuitive interface design. The course emplasizes file organization and layout including tables and frames.

Prerequisites: MGD 101.

 

RTV-106              Radio Program Production I (3 CR)

Focuses on the use of basic radio station equipment, programming, and formats. Includes simulated broadcasting using production studio facilities.

Creating Compelling Marketing Videos

Learn how to assess your client’s marketing video needs from a storytelling perspective, then learn the processes of pre-production planning, scripting, shooting (including lighting and sound techniques) and content gathering strategies, post-production planning and editing, exporting and content delivery, and client management skills. Students are encouraged to bring their own “prosumer” level video cameras if they would like to use their own video equipment. Utilizes Adobe Premiere video editing software (a working understanding of this program prior to class is encouraged, but not required). Instructor: Corby Anderson. Cost: $130.
 

In The Mix: Basic Audio Mixing Principles for Podcasting & More

Learn how to create your own audio content - everything from interesting podcasts, effective non-profit public service messages, books on tape and more using basic audio recording equipment and editing software. Instructor: Corby Anderson. Cost: $130.


On the Air: The History of Radio Production from the Hindenburg Disaster Broadcast to Modern Broadcasting & Microcasting

Learn the rich history of radio production from its origins in live newscasts and radio drama through the shockjock era into the modern era of satellite radio, syndicated commercial talk, public radio and individual podcasting techniques and practices. Instructor: Corby Anderson. Cost: $99.


Digital Storytelling Festival

Do you have a multimedia story to tell online? The Digital Storytelling Festival gives participants the opportunity to present their digital storytelling project to a group of media professionals to win prizes, including a $2000 Grand Prize. Technologies applicable to the contest include multimedia mobile and web formats only, although the storytelling itself can be in any discipline or field. Teams of up to three individuals may work together on one entry, however, only one entry per person will be allowed. Those interested in participating in the contest must submit an application and be accepted into the Festival before they will be able to register. Deadline is March 8. Digital Storytelling Workshop

Learn skills in digital storytelling, using current techniques and tools to create video. Emphasis will be on creating a compelling message. We will also discuss ways to distribute video and build an audience using social media. Among other topics, the course will include: concept development, lighting and audio, interviewing skills, covering a scene, writing, basic editing, and optimizing video for the web, and effective communication. Participants will create short videos for the web. Students are welcome to bring their own Mac laptop with video editing software and digital cameras, if they have them. However the focus of the course will be on storytelling as opposed to helping you figure out how to use your equipment. Instructor Greg Poschman, winner of three Emmy awards for directing and cinematography and numerous other awards and Michael Conniff. Cost: $130.
