Assessment for Placement

The Accuplacer is used for placement at Colorado Mountain College and is administered to potential and current students to assess academic levels prior to enrollment. The test will assess your content knowledge in reading, sentence skills, and mathematics.

All new degree and certificate students are required to take the placement tests.

This site is designed to answer some questions you may have about the Accuplacer, assist you in planning your preparation, and taking your test. Tests are administered on an appointment basis or in groups prior to each semester. See your CMC bulletin for hours and locations. The Accuplacer will save you time and money. Assessment scores must be less than two years old. ACT and SAT test scores must also be less than two years old.

Note: International students must score at Level 4 EAP by the LOEP test or a 450 or higher on the TOEFL.

Testing Guidelines

  • Bring picture I.D. You will not be permitted to test without proper identification.
  • Bring your Social Security # or your college I.D. #.
  • Please adhere to our hours, and allow sufficient time to take your test.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the testing center.
  • Under no circumstances can children under 12 years of age be allowed in the testing center or left unattended in the hallway.
  • All cell phones and beepers must be turned off upon entering the testing center.


Exemptions From Placement Testing

  • Students who have earned a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree.
  • Students who have previously been assessed at a Colorado public postsecondary institution.
  • Students who have successfully completed basic skills instruction in mathematics, writing, or reading are exempt from the requirement for assessment in that subject area only.
  • Students who have successfully completed a college-level course in English are exempt from the requirement for assessment in English and reading.
  • Students who have successfully completed a college-level course in mathematics are exempt from the requirement for assessment in mathematics.


Retest Policy

Approval to retest is at the discretion of the campus test administrator based upon the determination that the student has a reasonable opportunity to qualify for a higher-level course.

Requirements:

1. Student must provide evidence to the test administrator that remediation work has been done in preparation for retesting and/or the student must have had extenuating circumstances that did not allow satisfactory completion of testing the first time.
2. Only one retest per subject per semester allowed.
3. Minimum of a one-day waiting period.
4. The highest test score will be used. Please note: Accuplacer posts the most recent score. If the student scores lower on the retest, the test administrator will be responsible for manually entering the higher score in the student’s file after the retest score is posted.


Colleges Offering Remedial Courses

Students who have test scores that require remediation may take courses at any CMC location. Remedial courses are also offered at any Colorado community college, Adams State College, or Mesa State College.
