Nicaragua: Democracy in the Age of Globalization
This course is centered around a eight-day excursion to study the history and politics of Nicaragua.
Participants will visit and stay in Managua and the rural countryside, talking with people from all walks of life, and learning much about Nicaraguan history, culture, politics, and economics. Highlights include meetings with political leaders and cultural figures, investigating alternative economic development projects, visiting major landmarks in Managua, exploring an active volcano, and spending time at an active coffee-growing cooperative. Plans include visits to the cities of Granada and Matagalpa.
Themes of the course include the political and economic histories of Nicaragua, an investigation of the Nicaraguan political system, U.S. foreign policy in the region, free trade and fair trade, and poverty and democracy.
No Spanish language skills are required to participate. A valid U.S. passport and international health insurance are required.
- Course: POS 215: Current Political Issues
- Course Dates: October 1 – December 10 (6:00pm – 7:30pm Wednesdays)
- Travel Dates: November 15-22.
- Trip fee: $1270 (includes all lodging, meals, and in-country transportation) Note: fee does not include airfare (details on securing airfare will be provided by instructor)
- Registration and application deadline: September 8th
- $250 (non-refundable) deposit due at time of course registration

Summer Spanish Immersion Opportunities
Earn college credit by studying Spanish Immersion for four weeks or more with one of our affiliated language schools. Students travel independently to one of the following countries:
