Hands On.

You'll learn about computer hardware by building systems and installing networks. By researching system components and calling vendors, you'll determine the best configuration options for the best price.

The Microcomputer Support Specialist program teaches you to clearly understand the user's needs. With this understanding you can select and install the best hardware, software and network solution to fill the needs of the user. This program emphasizes five major areas:

Hardware. You will learn to use and manage microcomputers and common business software in a networked environment. The program will also teach you how to supervise the use of microcomputer hardware, software and data. You will learn computer hardware by actually building systems and installing networks. We teach our students to be resourceful. You will research the components, call vendors and determine the best configuration options for the best price.

Software. Learn how to support software applications for single and multiple users in a business environment. You will install, customize and test industry-standard networking software and business software.

Networks. You will become familiar with network administration. In computer labs that simulate a business network, you will install, organize and supervise local area networks, add users, and make programs available to multiple users.

Customer Service. In addition to strong technical skills, employers are asking for "soft skills" such as communication, problem solving, customer service and self-motivation. Our small class sizes allow us to simulate the work teams of the business world and teach you these non-technical skills. Through this environment you learn how to deal professionally with your co-workers while maintaining and enhancing your company's computer networks.

Internship. Experience is crucial for employment. Many students have the education an employer is looking for but they lack the practical work experience essential to getting the job done.

The Microcomputer Support Specialist internship* helps you increase your employability as you apply your technical knowledge to on-the-job situations. You may participate in two 135-hour internships at local businesses and agencies to help you refine your knowledge, skills and career goals. Many internships lead directly to employment for our students and graduates.

*The internship many not be available at some locations. See your advisor to determine if this is available in your area and, if not, what courses are an appropriate substitute for the internship.
