Get Started In Law Enforcement Training
Entrance Requirements for the Law Enforcement
Academy at Roaring Fork - Spring Valley
Colorado Mountain College at Spring Valley offers a State of Colorado P.O.S.T certified basic Law Enforcement Academy. Our tradition is that of a "non-stress" academy; in other words, students are not required to dress in a uniform or salute or call anyone "sir."
We believe that citizens want to have adults acting as peace officers in their communities. Therefore, we encourage an academy atmosphere that supports and rewards mutually respectful behavior, teamwork, and an openness to learning new and challenging ideas. Within this context we provide the skills that P.O.S.T. has deemed necessary for an entry level peace or corrections officer in the State of Colorado.
ACADEMY APPLICANTS MUST:
1. BE AT LEAST 21YEARS OF AGE
2. BE A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE OR HAVE A GED EQUIVALENT DIPLOMA
3. HOLD A VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE
4. HAVE NO PRIOR FELONY CONVICTIONS.
5. HAVE NO CONVICTION OF ANY CRIME INVOLVING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
Colorado Revised Statue 24-31-304 states:
1. Each training academy and college or university that has established a training program approved by the P.O.S.T Board shall provide written notice to each applicant that:
a. no person who has been convicted of a felony may be certified to serve as a peace officer or reserve peace officer in the state of Colorado; and
b. it is each applicant's responsibility to determine the applicant's eligibility for certification prior to enrolling in any training program.
2. Each training academy, college, or university shall take reasonable steps to exclude from such training program those applicants who have been convicted of a felony.
A CRIMINAL HISTORY BACKGROUND and F.B.I. FINGERPRINT CHECK must be provided to P.O.S.T. before students may sit for the State of Colorado certification examination which is given to students who successfully complete this law enforcement training course. We provide students with the forms necessary to complete this requirement after they are accepted into the academy.
If you decide to apply and you meet our standards for admission we will do everything possible to make the Academy a positive and fulfilling experience for you. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive fundamental educational framework with which you can enter the law enforcement field. Everything we will do together will be in support of that goal.
You must demonstrate college level reading, writing, and mathematics skills before entering this training program. Your skills in these areas may affect the sequence of courses in which you can enroll and may also extend the time required to complete the Law Enforcement Training Academy.
This program has certain physical and academic standards which you will be required to meet before you are admitted to the program. Students accepted into the college's vocational programs must be physically, mentally, and emotionally self-supportive with reasonable accommodations. If there is a concern about meeting the physical and academic standard, students need to contact the Special Populations Coordinator who will determine the student's ability to participate in this program.
