Emphasis Areas

The Associate of Arts degree from Colorado Mountain College prepares you for a variety of majors and careers. We also offer three emphasis areas to give you additional training in business, fine arts or wilderness studies. These emphasis areas use elective credits to provide specialized training.

Business
If you want to earn a four-year business degree, the Associate of Arts: Business Emphasis is for you.

Colorado's public colleges and universities have adopted a common set of credits in business which are accepted in transfer to all public institutions when taken as part of the Associate of Arts degree. If you complete the Associate of Arts: Business Emphasis degree from Colorado Mountain College you will fulfill the same lower-division requirements for business degree programs at Colorado's public, four-year institutions.

Outdoor Education
The Outdoor Education emphasis provides training in leadership and outdoor skills. It is designed to prepare you to transfer into a four-year outdoor leadership or recreation degree program.

Transferring from Colorado Mountain College can actually put you ahead of students who start at another school. Statistics show that our graduates who transfer perform above the average at some of Colorado's largest universities.

Visual Arts
The Visual Arts emphasis allows you to explore a variety of artistic expressions, from watercolors to ceramics. This program is designed to prepare you to transfer to a school of fine arts.

Students at Colorado Mountain College and four other two-year schools were compared to freshmen and sophomores at Drake University, Northwestern University, Xavier University and Carleton College. Researchers found no significant differences between the two groups for gains in reading comprehension, math, and critical thinking.

Colorado agreements guarantee that when you complete the Associate of Arts degree, with a "C" average or better in each class, you have fulfilled the lower division general education requirements for four-year arts and sciences programs at Colorado's public colleges and universities (Colorado School of Mines maintains a separate transfer agreement). The Associate of Arts checklist in the Colorado Mountain College Catalog helps you record your progress toward completing your degree.

We have signed additional associate degree agreements with schools throughout the state (public and private) to ensure a smooth transfer of elective credit. You must work with your advisor to check the transfer requirements of each institution, including requirements for a specific major.

Our graduates have also transferred to public and private colleges and universities across the nation, from Stanford to Wellesley.

If you are transferring to Colorado Mountain College from another college or university, we will evaluate and grant credit for courses you have taken which are comparable to those offered at Colorado Mountain college.
