AA101: The Student Experience
Introduces students to college culture and prepares them for success
in higher education. Through a series of thematic content one-credit
courses, students learn how to think critically, communicate clearly,
and use college resources to attain their education and life goals.
All students on the Roaring Fork Campus are
encouraged to take one or more of these thematic content courses. Students
enrolled in two or more developmental education courses on the Roaring
Fork Campus are required to take two of these courses.
Students may choose from any of the areas of
emphasis listed below. Please see the current catalogue for registration
information for each of these courses.
Leadership - Introduces students to leadership
principles and encourages students to explore personal responsibility
and how choices made impact their own and others attitudes and motivations.
Contemporary Social Issues -
Students will explore issues that affect local, national, and international
populations. Topics will include civil rights, foreign policy, right
to privacy, and other issues that may arise during the semester.
Career and Self Exploration -
Introduces students to theories and practices related to identifying
individual skills, strengths, and career interests. Students will research
career fields, take personality and career assessments, and complete
a professional cover letter and resume.
Health and Wellness -
Offers students current information in the health field and provides
self-assessments for health risks and wellness behaviors.
Cultural Awareness and Diversity -
Introduces students to a wide range of concepts related to cultural
awareness and diversity including prejudice and discrimination and
issues of difference around class, gender, race, ethnicity, age and
ability.
Common Reader Plenty -
Explores ideas generated from the witty, inspiring, and amazing campus-wide
common reader Plenty.
Students question the ethics of food, globalization, the oil economy,
and the splintering of community.
Environmental Awareness - Students will investigate
local, national, and global environmental issues from a social, economic,
and scientific perspective. The course will examine how human behavior
impacts the planet with an emphasis on sustainability and responsible
environmental behavior.
