Faculty of the Year 2005

John SaundersJohn Saunders - Full-Time Faculty -Outdoor Education
John has exhibited the highest standards of student-centered concern, thoughtfulness, and decision-making.   With all of his courses, the students’ well-being and growth has been at the center of his thought and responsiveness.  He develops his curricula in such a way that the students can have fun AND learn about outdoor education skills, philosophy, responsibility, risk management, and personal actions and outcomes.

John is involved in various student groups (some in which he sponsors and others in which he helps the faculty sponsor); taking them on weekend trips out-of-state and in-state.

John has gone above and beyond his job description with regard to his participation on the Strategic Oversight Committee (SOC).  He has taken on large tasks, vetted the ideas to various groups, contributed thoughtfully and thoroughly, and has been encouraging to other members of the team.

Tiffany GebhardtTiffany Gebhardt - Adjunct Faculty - English Language Learning
Tiffany Gebhardt has a masters in ESL from the University of Colorado and several years of teaching experience. She began working as a volunteer in the ESL program in Spring, 2001 and after a semester, received the pay of an aide even though she was responsible for teaching an entire class. She later was hired as an adjunct professor, and took over full responsibility of teaching the intermediate ESL class.  This meant she had two sets of preparation – one for the low intermediates and one for the higher group.

Tiffany plans meaningful and fun lessons and her students attend regularly.  Tiffany helps with the registration, intake, testing and placement of all new students and remains calm and efficient no matter how many students arrive on the first night.  She always has a fun and engaging “ice breaker’ and students immediately feel comfortable even if they have very limited English.

At the end of each semester, Tiffany completes all the forms required by the Colorado Dept of Education, and she manages to post test her students and track their progress. She ensures that each student receives a certificate for progress or attendance if it is appropriate.  She encourages them to strive to graduate from her class and move onto the next – even though many of them are loathe to leave her.

She has been invaluable to Alpine’s ELL program, taking on an additional morning class to help cater to the increased population, helping with the “International Evening” held annually to benefit the immigrant population, sharing information gained at conferences, and supporting students and faculty.
